I spend so much time full of good intentions and then somehow I (like many people) let time get in the way. December was a blur of Christmas preparations and now we are already into the second week of January and no news from me *hangs head in shame* 😉 Soooo to take up where I left off…
My last post was about my success at the Loupe International Photographic Awards. At that point I still had 1 image that I had not gotten the results for. At the last possible moment, after days of obsessive email checking, I was notified that I had achieved another bronze award (yay for me!!!!) So there we go – 3 images entered and 3 bronzes! The sense of achievement is something that was quite unexpected and made me very proud of my efforts 🙂
The really weird thing is that the more I looked at my final image the more things jumped out at me that I would have liked to change. Only small subtle things but things that might have pushed me into the silver category (I only missed silver by a few points in the scoring). I was chatting with some photography friends (hi girls and guys 😉 ) and they asked me to post a before and after so that is what I am going to do here.
This is the image as I entered it into the awards….
It works for me but…
The reeds didn’t look pronounced enough and the bottom left was too washed out for my second look so I “tweaked” it and this is what I would have liked to have entered ….
I just lifted some of the colour from the right side and brushed it into the left corner. To my taste it is now much better 😉 It is only a small difference but in impact it takes the emphasis off the brighter white corner. The human eye is drawn to the lightest part of an image and I felt that no interest in that bright part was bothersome. So there you go. A small difference but a significant one.
I guess the big thing that I learnt out of that experience is that if I have a photo that I think is competition worthy I need to spend a few weeks looking at it daily to see what pops out at me before I send it in, hehehe.
Overall though I am pretty darned happy with the results and can’t wait to try my hand at another comp. Bring it on!!!!
Oh and belated Happy New Years and thanks for sticking with me thus far. They journey is about to get really exciting soon so stay tuned 😉
